Having a gap in your smile can be both annoying and uncomfortable. Therefore, it is understandable if you are eager to fill in that empty area as soon as possible if you have had a tooth taken or you are aware that one of your teeth will soon need to be removed. How soon after a tooth extraction may I have dental implants? Each patient has a different response. This blog article explores a few potential outcomes.
Can I Get Dental Implants Placed Immediately?
It’s not always necessary to wait after a tooth extraction before getting dental implants. Some of our patients are ideal candidates immediate dental implant placement immediately following tooth extraction. The patient must have enough jawbone surrounding the extraction site in order to justify immediate placement. Absence of dental infection is necessary to ensure successful placement. The dentist may prescribe an antibiotic if an infection persists. If these conditions are satisfied, the dental implant can be placed immediately, a temporary crown can be attached, and after about 12 weeks of healing, the permanent crown can be attached.
Your general health, the placement of the restoration, the state of your gums, and the density of your jawbone all play a role in whether you are a candidate for tooth extraction and rapid dental implants.
Two Step Dental Implant Placement
Even though it’s not ideal, there are situations when delaying the placement of dental implants for up to 4 months is optimal. Insufficient bone or infection in the area are the two main causes of a lengthier delay in placing dental implants. Please remember to keep up with your regular dental visits every six months to help identify problem areas. Dental issues can get worse over time if left untreated. If this is the case, it may be necessary for the patient to undergo jaw bone grafting surgery in order to “generate” additional jaw bone tissue before the dental implants can be placed correctly.
Of course, one can still replace several teeth with conventional dentures. Traditional, removable dentures may be the best choice for patients who are not healthy enough to undergo surgery or who do not want to undergo surgery, despite the fact that they do not offer the same secure fit and enhanced function as implant-supported dentures.
